SMEC South Africa has exciting opportunities for a Senior Materials Technician (SMT) in their Bloemfontein, Construction & Pavements function. This function, specialising in pavement and rehabilitation design, materials investigation and design, and construction supervision and administration, prides itself on technical excellence.
This position is responsible for the below-mentioned elements of the construction works on various large SANRAL road construction projects on the N1 near Bloemfontein.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prioritize, schedule, perform and document field and laboratory testing to evaluate the acceptability of materials used on the structures and road construction.
- Interpret engineering test methodologies in accordance with COLTO, TMH, TRH, TG-series, SANS, and other relevant standards
- Review and evaluate available construction materials and sources, and prepare laboratory and field computations to evaluate results and classify materials
- Maintain records of all testing performed in the field and laboratory, and compile material as-built documentation
- Monitor the calibration and serviceability of laboratory and field testing equipment, and liaise with commercial laboratories regarding such
- Resolve issues with Contractor and Engineer regarding non-compliance with materials specifications, and make recommendations for corrective action that may be needed
- Communicate with the Employers materials staff, and ensure compliance with the Employers reporting and other requirements
- Prepare all materials COLTO as-built records
- Professional Technologist registration (preferably), or Professional Technician registration.
- Minimum 10 years experience working as a Materials Technician on SANRAL and/or Provincial roads projects.
- Advanced knowledge in road construction materials
- Advanced knowledge in material testing and material evaluation.
- Knowledge of COLTO and/or COTO and other relevant Standard Specifications.
- Quality control and civil materials laboratory managing skills are essential.
- Valid drivers license (minimum code B).
- Proven organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
