The Main Purpose Of This Position/job Is
Reporting to the Deputy Director: Energy, Utilities and Compliance, the successful incumbent will be required to co-ordinate both mechanical and electrical engineering activities by ensuring the effective organization and implementation of the maintenance system, standards and statutory requirements
Brief Description
Occupational Health And Safety Knowledge / Experience
Experience in implementing and enforcing an occupational health and safety management system conforming to the OHSA and its Regulations, the National Building Regulations, and applicable local and international standards will be a strong recommendation, as will involvement in OH&S at different levels.
Technical Knowledge / Experience
The incumbent must have good knowledge and experience of:
- Mechanical devices and systems, especially machinery, used in factories;
- Lifts and escalators
- Lifting equipment
- Fire systems
- Bulk hot water systems
- Generator and backup systems
- High- and medium-voltage electrical power transmission and distribution; and
- Installation and control of electrical systems.
- Basic knowledge of chemical / metallurgical processes and plant, as well as basic knowledge of radiation protection and related risk management, would be helpful, but are not essential
Presentations to Faculty and / or School personnel. Candidate will be required to motivate additions or amendments to health and safety measures or protocols within the University or any of its Faculties / Schools.

- A tertiary qualification at degree level, e.g. a B.Sc.(Eng.) or a B.Tech. is preferable.
- National Diploma in any branch of Engineering (preferably mechanical or electro-technical or electrical).
- A Government Certificate of Competency as a Mechanical Engineer or an Electrical Engineer, issued in accordance with the OHSA by the Department of Labour
- 5-years experience in electrical & mechanical engineering environment and facilities management, including previous appointment as GMR 2(1) or 2(7).
- Proven experience in managing or supervising within the manufacturing/production/education sector
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and quality control standards
- Ability to troubleshoot and maintain mechanical/electrical systems
- Leadership and decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.
