Technical Asset Manager - Solar PV

As a Technical Asset Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the technical performance, maintenance, and optimisation of our renewable energy assets. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our renewable energy projects' efficient operation and reliability. This role requires a strong understanding of renewable energy technologies, project management skills, and the ability to analyse and interpret technical data. 
 
Position of the job in the organisation:
This person will report to the Head of Asset Management. 
 
Principal responsibilities: 
  • Monitor the performance of renewable energy assets, including solar panels and other technologies, to ensure optimal efficiency and uptime. 
  • Analyse performance data, identify trends and implement strategies to maximise energy production and minimise downtime. 
  • Ensure the monitoring platform is 100% correctly configured for every asset 
  • Ensure every customer has a dashboard that accurately reflects the technical and financial performance of their assets 
  • Ensure every customer has login details to their dashboards 
  • Provide customers with regular training on the use and analysis of their dashboards 
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the performance of each asset and track progress over time. 
  • Review maintenance plans prepared by the O&M department and recommend improvements, if any. 
  • Identify opportunities for asset optimisation and efficiency improvements, such as equipment upgrades or operational adjustments. 
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies to address potential technical issues and regulatory compliance requirements. 
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to renewable energy asset management. 
  • Work closely with finance and accounting teams to develop budgets, forecasts, and financial reports related to asset performance and maintenance activities. 
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide regular reports on the technical and financial performance of renewable energy assets. 
  • Attend technical review committee meetings and feedback to the committee on lessons learned and ensure these are adopted into new projects  
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, engineering, finance, and project development, to support the successful operation and optimisation of renewable energy projects. 
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and external partners to coordinate activities and resolve technical issues. 
  • Build strong relationships with contractors and sub-contractors that are responsible for executing on plant performance optimisation projects 
  • Visit company sites regularly to assess status, conditions, and performance of solar assets, approximately two visits per month. 
  • Maintain data security and confidentiality of project-related information and documentation. 
  • Comply with all required fire, health, and safety requirements for the environment you are working in, including attending any required training and acting in accordance with policies and risk assessments.

PERSON DESCRIPTION 
 
Experience: 
  • Bachelor's degree in data, informatics, engineering, renewable energy, or related field.  
  • 3+ years of proven experience in technical asset management, preferably in the renewable energy industry. 
  • Strong understanding of renewable energy technologies, including solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems. 
  • Experience with performance monitoring, maintenance planning, and asset optimisation. 
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to renewable energy asset management. 
  • Valid driver's license and willing to travel.  
 
Specific attributes: 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively monitor and analyse the performance of renewable energy assets. 
  • Proven track record of implementing maintenance plans to ensure the reliability and longevity of assets. 
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate maintenance activities and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
 
Desirable attributes: 
  • Familiarity with financial analysis and reporting related to renewable energy assets. 
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners to achieve project goals. 
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to stakeholders at all levels. 
 
What Does Success Look Like? 
 
By Month 3:  
  • I would have developed a comprehensive understanding of the technical performance and maintenance requirements of our renewable energy assets, including solar photovoltaic systems and energy storage technologies.  
  • I would have established effective monitoring and reporting systems to track the performance of renewable energy assets and identify areas for optimisation.  
  • I would have initiated discussions with key stakeholders to assess current maintenance practices and identify opportunities for improvement.  
  • I would have completed any required training or certifications related to renewable energy asset management and regulatory compliance. 
  • I will have implemented preliminary optimisations to improve customer asset performance and reduce downtime, based on the review of maintenance strategies and activities. 
 
By Month 6:  
  • I would be actively implementing maintenance plans and optimisation strategies to improve the reliability and efficiency of our renewable energy assets.  
  • I would be leading cross-functional teams to execute plant performance enhancement activities and coordinate with third-party vendors as needed.  
  • I will have built strong relationships with contractors and subcontractors, effectively directing their work to meet or exceed contracted service level agreements (SLAs). 
  • I would analyse performance data to identify trends and implement proactive maintenance measures to minimise downtime and maximise energy production.  
  • I would be actively participating in industry events and staying updated on emerging technologies and best practices in renewable energy asset management. 
  • I will be conducting regular site visits to assess project status and conditions, implementing ongoing optimisations and addressing any emerging issues proactively 
By Month 12: 
  • I can confidently demonstrate measurable improvements in the performance and reliability of our renewable energy assets, resulting in increased energy production and reduced downtime.  
  • I can effectively communicate the impact of maintenance and optimisation efforts to stakeholders, including financial benefits and environmental considerations.  
  • I can provide recommendations for long-term asset management strategies, including equipment upgrades and investment opportunities. 
  • I can mentor and support junior team members in technical asset management practices and industry standards. 
  • I will be preparing comprehensive technical asset performance reports on each asset, providing detailed insights into performance, maintenance activities, and financial metrics.
