Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As our Control & Instrumentation Technologist some of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
  • Consistently apply safety and health principles in all site interactions within and beyond one's work area.
  • Identify specific risks within the working area and adhere to discipline-specific plans/systems to avoid these risks.
  • Participate in relevant safety audits, inspections and observations and address issues to demonstrate safety leadership.
  • Promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where employees can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • Design and develop new control systems and designs.
  • Perform benchmarking on innovative technologies to ensure the operation meets best practice standards.
  • Test, maintain, and modify existing systems.
  • Support advanced maintenance programs such as reliability-centered maintenance.
  • Conduct failure modes and effect analysis and participate in the review of equipment and component failures.
  • Collaborate with design engineers and operation engineers in the operation.
  • Manage projects within cost and time-constrained environments.
  • Provide C&I automation technical input as required and coordinate the development of Sishen mine standards.
  • Coordinate and analyse C&I automation audits to ensure compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Provide technical advice and support.
  • Build, manage and maintain healthy, diverse, workable internal and external relations and implementing remedial actions were required to achieve organisational goals.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to provide relevant and specialised technical support and input for operations and projects.
  • Contribute to the development of the Department budget.
  • Manage the section's expenditure within the approved budget to ensure effective cost control and savings.
  • Identify any opportunities for improved cost management, and either address these or raise them with your manager.
This role is in the Engineering (ENG) department on a band 6.10 level reporting to the Section Manager C&I Engineer

Qualifications
  • National Diploma in Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering (NQF6)
  • SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
  • Understanding of key value drivers and their interdependence in the value chain.
  • Knowledge of operational process classification based on the Operating Model, emphasising Work Management.
  • Familiarity with fundamental principles of project management.
  • Awareness of new technologies and their impact on operational activities.
  • Understanding of business improvement tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of business acumen and commercial drivers of site performance.
  • Basic familiarity with financial metrics and budgeting tools.
  • Awareness of risk management techniques and critical controls.
  • Knowledge of leadership tools for implementing a purpose-led high-performance and change culture.
  • Knowledge of safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements
